DESCRIPTION:Poet and Jazz Scholar Reuben Jackson will host a screening of the documentary film “It Must Schwing – The Blue Note Story” at the Vermont International Film Festival in October. \n  \n\n\n“In 1939\, Alfred Lion and Francis Wolff\, two young émigrés from Berlin\, founded the legendary jazz label Blue Note Records in New York. The label dedicated itself exclusively to the recording of American jazz music and developed its own unmistakeable recording style and sound. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nBlue Note Records discovered and produced an impressive roster of international jazz stars. This included Miles Davis\, Herbie Hancock\, John Coltrane\, Sonny Rollins\, Wayne Shorter\, Thelonious Monk and Quincy Jones. At a time when Afro-American musicians in the USA were discriminated against and ostracised\, Blue Note records respected them as artists and equals. Not only did the label value their talents\, it also gave them a much-needed platform. „It Must Schwing!“ tells the moving story of two friends\, united by a passionate love for jazz\, and of their profound belief in equality and freedom for every single human being.”

Julian Clement Chase\, 22\, was a native of Washington DC\, and graduated in 2008 from DC’s Wilson High School. While serving with the United States Marine Corps\, he was killed in action in the Helmand Province of Afghanistan. He was set to matriculate as a freshman at GW in Spring 2013. Julian was born in Washington. He knew and relished his city. His family has established this prize in his honor to recognize others who explore DC with the intelligence and exuberance that he did.

Her literary honors include the Katherine Anne Porter Prize for Fiction and various travel writing\, poetry\, and fiction awards. Her latest novel\, Dead Love\, was a Bram Stoker Award Finalist for Superior Achievement in a Novel. As the founder of Left Coast Writers\, Watanabe McFerrin has taught and mentored a long list of writers and is a beloved figure in California’s rich\, historic literary culture.
