SUMMARY:Reuben Jackson to host screening of "It Must Schwing- The Blue Note Story" followed by a Q & A
DESCRIPTION:Poet and Jazz Scholar Reuben Jackson will host a screening of the documentary film “It Must Schwing – The Blue Note Story” at the Vermont International Film Festival in October. \n  \n\n\n“In 1939\, Alfred Lion and Francis Wolff\, two young émigrés from Berlin\, founded the legendary jazz label Blue Note Records in New York. The label dedicated itself exclusively to the recording of American jazz music and developed its own unmistakeable recording style and sound. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nBlue Note Records discovered and produced an impressive roster of international jazz stars. This included Miles Davis\, Herbie Hancock\, John Coltrane\, Sonny Rollins\, Wayne Shorter\, Thelonious Monk and Quincy Jones. At a time when Afro-American musicians in the USA were discriminated against and ostracised\, Blue Note records respected them as artists and equals. Not only did the label value their talents\, it also gave them a much-needed platform. „It Must Schwing!“ tells the moving story of two friends\, united by a passionate love for jazz\, and of their profound belief in equality and freedom for every single human being.”

SUMMARY:"Navigating the Divide" West Coast Launch Party (introduction by Elaine Petrocelli)
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a West Coast launch party for Linda Watanabe McFerrin’s Navigating the Divide. The official East Coast launch party for all three titles can be found HERE \nLinda will be introduced by notable bookseller and Book Passage Founder Elaine Petrocelli. \nNavigating the Divide: Selected Poetry and Prose is a career-spanning\, multi-genre collection from the award-winning Asian-American writer and indie lit legend Linda Watanabe McFerrin. In poetry and prose that is sometimes profoundly personal\, sometimes astoundingly surreal\, this world traveler and devoted literary explorer breaks down walls\, bridges\, cultures\, and genres\, delighting and instructing the reader. This rich\, multi-faceted collection really does “navigate the divide” between spiritual and physical\, between thought and desire\, between identity and others. \nLinda Watanabe McFerrin is a poet\, travel writer\, and novelist. She is the author of two poetry collections\, two novels\, a collection of award-winning short stories\, and a travel guidebook. Her literary honors include the Katherine Anne Porter Prize for Fiction and various travel writing\, poetry\, and fiction awards. Her latest novel\, Dead Love\, was a Bram Stoker Award Finalist for Superior Achievement in a Novel. As the founder of Left Coast Writers\, Watanabe McFerrin has taught and mentored a long list of writers and is a beloved figure in California’s rich\, historic literary culture. She has led workshops around the world\, and with ASP author Joanna Biggar\, she co-founded the Wanderland Writers series of workshops and anthologies\, which they co-edit.

SUMMARY:A Tribute to Poet Laureate Grace Cavalieri at The Gaithersburg Book Festival
DESCRIPTION:“Grace’s gift for community-building is legendary\, but her attention to poets and their work always feels deeply\, preciously personal. Writers across the country have tales to tell of her offering the right word at the right time\, and remark on her ability to inspire both those new to poetry and seasoned professionals with the power and beauty of the written word. What is most astonishing to me is how she built this role from scratch: while many other poets and mentors of her stature operate from a base of academic or other institutional support\, Grace has carved an independent path out of her genuine and inspiring passion for poetry” — Rose Solari \nASP co-founder and poet Rose Solari will host a talent laden tribute to Maryland’s 10th poet laureate\, Grace Cavalieri\, this May at the Gaithersburg Book Festival. \nAs a part of the tribute\, Katherine E. Young\, former Poet Laureate of Arlington\, will speak about the tradition and role of the Poet Laureate in our culture\, and why Grace so beautifully suits the post. Reuben Jackson\, a jazz schola \nr and radio host as well as a poet\, will talk about Grace’s groundbreaking work in getting poetry on the radio and Elizabeth Hazen\, a young poet and one of many to have been mentored by Grace\, will talk about Grace’s tremendous track record of supporting and nurturing other poets and Cavalieri herself will speak about\, and share some of her work.
