SUMMARY:Left Coast Writers Book Launch: Linda Watanabe McFerrin Hosts Judy Bebelaar and Ron Cabral
DESCRIPTION:Judy Bebelaar and Ron Cabral are the authors of a new book detailing the lives lost in the 1978 Jonestown massacre\, And Then They Were Gone: Teenagers from Peoples Temple from High School to Jonestown. \nThe wonderful Linda Watanabe McFerrin hosts at The Book Passage. Linda’s new book\, Navigating the Divide\, is out from ASP this fall season. \nFrom the Book Passage Site \nOf the 918 Americans who died in the shocking murder-suicides of November 18\, 1978\, in the tiny South American country of Guyana\, a third were under eighteen. More than half were in their twenties or younger. “And Then They Were Gone: Teenagers from Peoples Temple from High School to Jonestown” begins in San Francisco at the small school where Reverend Jim Jones enrolled the teens of his Peoples Temple church in 1976. Within a year\, most had been sent to join Jones and other congregants in what Jones promised was a tropical paradise based on egalitarian values\, but which turned out to be a deadly prison camp. Set against the turbulent backdrop of the late 1970s\, And Then They Were Gone draws from interviews\, books\, and articles. Many of these powerful stories are told here for the first time. \nJudy Bebelaar taught English and creative writing in San Francisco public high schools for 37 years. She has received national recognition for her success in helping students find joy in writing their lives. Her poetry has been published widely. Her chapbook\, Walking Across the Pacific\, was published in 2014 by Finishing Line Press. Her poems appear in three anthologies: Turning a Train of Thought Upside Down (Scarlet Tanager Press\, 2012); The Widows’ Handbook (Kent State U. Press 2014); and in River of Earth and Sky (Blue Light Press\, 2015). \nRon Cabral\, a native of San Francisco\, entered teaching in the San Francisco Unified School District in 1965 and became a Middle School principal in 1992. He served 35 years in that capacity\, finally retiring in 2002. Ron met Judy Bebelaar\, a fellow teacher\, in 1969 at Opportunity 1\, where he taught Urban Problems\, Music Appreciation\, Journalism\, Drugs and Society\, and Radio Production. He also managed and coached the school baseball team. He later transferred to Wilson High School in 1978. Ron is married with three grown children and five grandsons. He lives in Contra Costa County.

Reuben Jackson is currently an archivist with the University of the District of Columbia’s Felix E. Grant Jazz Archives. From 2013 until 2018\, he was host of Friday Night Jazz on Vermont Public Radio. \n  \n \n  \nJonathan Katz\, Ph.D.\, has directed the state arts agency in Kansas\, the children’s museum in Denver\, and the graduate arts management program at the U. of IL.-Springfield. As CEO of the National Assembly of State Arts Agencies (NASAA)\, he guided an association whose members invest over $400 million of public funds annually in artistic and cultural activities\, he co-founded the nation’s Arts Education Partnership\, and he helped create Poetry Out Loud. SUMMARY:Revise\, Rethink\, Reveal: A Two-Part Poetry Workshop at Politics and Prose led by Rose Solari
DESCRIPTION:Revise\, Rethink\, Reveal: A Two-Part Poetry Workshop at Politics and Prose \nThis poetry workshop at Politics and Prose is led by Rose Solari\, distinguished author of The Last Girl\, Orpheus in the Park\, and Difficult Weather. It is designed to help experienced poets revise a “stuck” poem and bring it to a satisfying completion. \nAll poets have them. Whether stuffed in a drawer or buried in a computer file – those poems which started so promisingly\, and then\, somehow\, stalled. This 2-session workshop will give you a chance to rethink a “problem” poem\, and see it through to a satisfying revision in the company of other writers struggling with the same issue. The week before our first meeting\, each participant will submit one such poem to the group. These poems will be the focus of our discussion\, as we examine first the strengths of each\, and then move to possible strategies for revision. Along the way\, we’ll explore the elements of poetry\, focusing particularly on line and stanza breaks\, voice\, and sound\, and uncover how those elements come to form a unified\, meaningful whole. The following week\, we’ll meet again\, revisions in hand\, for more group discussion. Be ready to stretch your comfort zone\, expand your poetry toolbox\, and have fun. \nBoth meetings will take place at Politics and Prose in Washington\, DC \nMeeting one: Thursday\, 10/18/2018\, 10am-12:30pm \nMeeting two: Thursday\, 10/25/2018\, 10am-12:30pm \n  \nMore details will soon be available on the P&P site
