SUMMARY:Reuben Jackson and Jonathan Katz Reading at Evelyn's in Annapolis
DESCRIPTION:Poets Reuben Jackson and Jonathan Katz will be reading together at Annapolis’ Evelyn’s (a bistro focused on local organic foods and sustainability) as part of the Evil Grin Reading Series.  \nReuben has told me personally that he will be “scattering some clouds around” so this is not to be missed. Apropos of that\, Reuben’s new poetry collection is Scattered Clouds due out from ASP this fall season. \n  \n \nReuben Jackson served as curator of the Smithsonian’s Duke Ellington Collection in Washington\, D.C. for over twenty years. His music reviews have been published in the Washington Post\, Washington City Paper\, Jazz Times\, and on NPR’s “All Things Considered.” Jackson is also an educator and mentor with The Young Writers Project. He taught poetry for 11 years at the Writer’s Center in Bethesda\, Maryland and taught high school for two years in Burlington\, Vermont. His poems have been published in over 40 anthologies; his first volume is fingering the keys\, which Joseph Brodsky picked for the Columbia Book Award. Reuben Jackson is currently an archivist with the University of the District of Columbia’s Felix E. Grant Jazz Archives. From 2013 until 2018\, he was host of Friday Night Jazz on Vermont Public Radio. \n  \n \n  \nJonathan Katz\, Ph.D.\, has directed the state arts agency in Kansas\, the children’s museum in Denver\, and the graduate arts management program at the U. of IL.-Springfield. As CEO of the National Assembly of State Arts Agencies (NASAA)\, he guided an association whose members invest over $400 million of public funds annually in artistic and cultural activities\, he co-founded the nation’s Arts Education Partnership\, and he helped create Poetry Out Loud. He consults extensively on strategic planning and leadership development\, serves on the board of American Poetry Review\, and lives in beautiful Takoma Park\, MD\, with his muse\, Terri Moreland. Preorder Katz’s new full length book of poetry Objects In Motion. Order Katz’s chapbook\, Love Undefined\, out now.

SUMMARY:Revise\, Rethink\, Reveal: A Two-Part Poetry Workshop at Politics and Prose led by Rose Solari
DESCRIPTION:Revise\, Rethink\, Reveal: A Two-Part Poetry Workshop at Politics and Prose \nThis poetry workshop at Politics and Prose is led by Rose Solari\, distinguished author of The Last Girl\, Orpheus in the Park\, and Difficult Weather. It is designed to help experienced poets revise a “stuck” poem and bring it to a satisfying completion. \nAll poets have them. Whether stuffed in a drawer or buried in a computer file – those poems which started so promisingly\, and then\, somehow\, stalled. This 2-session workshop will give you a chance to rethink a “problem” poem\, and see it through to a satisfying revision in the company of other writers struggling with the same issue. The week before our first meeting\, each participant will submit one such poem to the group. These poems will be the focus of our discussion\, as we examine first the strengths of each\, and then move to possible strategies for revision. Along the way\, we’ll explore the elements of poetry\, focusing particularly on line and stanza breaks\, voice\, and sound\, and uncover how those elements come to form a unified\, meaningful whole. The following week\, we’ll meet again\, revisions in hand\, for more group discussion. Be ready to stretch your comfort zone\, expand your poetry toolbox\, and have fun. \nBoth meetings will take place at Politics and Prose in Washington\, DC \nMeeting one: Thursday\, 10/18/2018\, 10am-12:30pm \nMeeting two: Thursday\, 10/25/2018\, 10am-12:30pm \n  \nMore details will soon be available on the P&P site

SUMMARY:2-Part Workshop By Rose Solari\, “Elements of Writing: Setting”
DESCRIPTION:Mondays\, May 14 and 21\, 10:00 a.m.-noon at Politics & Prose\, 5015 Connecticut Avenue NW Washington\, D.C. 20008\, Rose Solari will be teaching a 2-part workshop\, “Elements of Writing: Setting.” You can register for it here. \nBelievable\, fully rounded characters are a key ingredient of good fiction. But the setting in which those characters live and enact their comedy or drama is an equally important\, if often more elusive\, element of powerful storytelling. Imagine Jane Eyre without the English Moors\, or The Odyssey without Greece! In this two-part workshop\, we will look at some examples in which setting becomes an active participant in the story\, and\, through the use of some in class-writing exercises\, explore and improve our own ability to create vivid and immediate settings for our work.
