SUMMARY:THE PUSHKIN CLUB. LOOK AT HIM: AN EVENING WITH ANNA STAROBINETS AND TRANSLATOR KATHERINE E. YOUNG (hybrid)
DESCRIPTION:“The Pushkin Club is delighted to welcome Anna Starobinets\, a journalist\, scriptwriter and novelist who has recently fled Russia\, and Katherine E. Young\, a translator and laureate of the Pushkin House translation residency. They will discuss Anna’s recent book\, Look At Him – a ‘beautiful\, darkly humorous\, and deeply moving’ memoir that explores the moral and psychological effects of the loss of a pregnancy and its aftermath. In Russia\, the book was the subject of a storm of controversy\, prompting both praise and severe condemnation for the author’s willingness to discuss long-taboo issues of women’s agency over their own bodies\, the aftereffects of abortion and miscarriage on marriage and family life\, and the callousness and ignorance displayed by many in Russia in situations like hers. Starobinets and Young will also discuss the overall publishing situation for writing about women’s lives and family wellbeing in Russia and describe Look at Him‘s journey beyond Russia in translation. Both Look At Him and the author herself are life-affirming\, honest and engaging\, and this promises to be an incredibly special evening.” \nBuy online or in-person tickets: https://www.pushkinhouse.org/events/pushkin-club-look-at-him

SUMMARY:Short Fiction Workshop with Dave Housley (virtual)
DESCRIPTION:SUMMARY:\n\n\n8 weeks starting on June 12\, 2022 \n\n\n$250 \n\n\nLimited to 12 \n\n\nEvery participant will have a chance to workshop 2 stories. \n\n\nHOW DOES IT WORK?\nThese are online workshops\, so\, you know\, everything is online and asynchronous. Participants log in to the workshop space throughout the week\, whenever convenient for them. We’ve had workshop participants from all over the world. \nWork is generally posted every week\, and each participant posts their comments to that week’s discussion board. Discourse grows during the course of the week\, ideally very similar to a face-to-face workshop. At the same time\, we frequently have a number of discussions happening on various topics\, including general writing-related and publishing issues and questions\, to very specific elements of craft. The workshops are run using the Canvas learning management system.

SUMMARY:Saida Agostini at Red Emma's (in-person)
DESCRIPTION:Saida Agostini presents her debut collection of poetry\, let the dead in\, at Red Emma’s bookstore in Baltimore. \nAudacious\, sensual\, and grieving\, this work explores how Black women harness the fantastic to craft their own road to freedom. A journey across Guyana\, London\, and the United States\, it is a meditation on black womanhood\, queerness\, the legacy of colonization\, and pleasure. These poems craft a creation story fat with love\, queerness\, mermaids\, and blackness.

SUMMARY:ASP at Oxford Lit Festival: A Tidy Ending and The Other Ones\, Joanna Cannon and Dave Housley
DESCRIPTION:Novelists Dave Housley and Joanna Cannon discuss their latest works and the role of humour in writing. \nCannon is the bestselling author of The Trouble with Goats and Sheep\, which established her as a novelist with a unique blend of funny yet poignant prose.  Her latest novel\, A Tidy Ending\, is a sinister novel about a married woman living a suburban life\, where things are not quite what they seem. Linda’s husband starts keeping odd hours at the same time some local women go missing. Meanwhile\, Linda is trying to track down and befriend the previous occupant of her house\, Rebecca\, in the hope that she will enjoy some of her glamorous lifestyle. Cannon trained as a psychiatrist and is author of three novels. \nHousley’s The Other Ones tracks the actions of an office lottery pool after they win the jackpot. Some dig in\, some leave\, some go crazy\, and one commits suicide by jumping off the office roof and returns to haunt the rest. Funny\, tragic\, and real\, The Other Ones shines a light on our contemporary relationships to money\, work\, and one another. Housley is also author of two other novels and four collections of stories.
