SUMMARY:1455 festival features Rose Solari\, Katherine E. Young\, Linda Watanabe McFerrin\, and Saida Agostini (virtual event)
DESCRIPTION:Catch a full host of ASP authors and friends at the 1455 Festival. Register here: https://web.cvent.com/event/09e46134-4022-438e-9297-72ee3f323a1d/summary \nJuly 16th @10:30am Katherine E. Young Unspoken: New Writing on Losing a Child \nAlthough nearly one-quarter of all pregnancies result in the loss of a child\, pregnancy loss has traditionally been considered a “women’s issue” and remains largely unexplored in contemporary literature. Infertility\, miscarriage\, postpartum depression\, and the grief associated with losing a child are themes that have also largely been neglected in literary works\, both here in the U.S. and abroad. The four authors whose work features in this panel employ poetry\, journalism\, essay\, and the prose memoir to reclaim and foreground this central human experience not just for women\, but for their partners\, spouses\, families\, communities\, and societies in the U.S.\, Germany\, and Russia. \nJuly 16th @ 12pm Hannah Grieco Creative Nonfiction Editor Panel \nWhat makes a work of creative nonfiction compelling and unforgettable? What’s the difference between literary nonfiction and the essays you see in freelance publications? What are nonfiction editors looking for in their literary submissions? Learn what editors want to read\, what makes a piece stand out from the slush\, and what mistakes writers often make when submitting their true stories to literary journals. \nJuly 16th @ 1pm Saida Agostini In Praise of Grandmothers: Poems in Dialogue with Our Elders \nWe come together to honor inscribing inherited knowledge into our poems—the realities and lessons received from our grandparents’ generation. Too often powerful family stories are labeled “sentimental” by the academic workshop model. How do we reclaim them\, and locate ourselves in a lineage of writers following the same instinct? Our panel of accomplished authors will discuss the intricacies of writing history and cultural inheritance into poems\, providing brief illustrating readings from our work alongside our contemporaries. \nJuly 16th @5:30 Linda Watanabe McFerrin & Rose Solari Telling Stories\, Building Community \nEveryone has a story to tell. The magic of sharing those stories is that while it can often be healing for the writer\, it can also build bridges between peoples\, cultures\, groups\, and nations. On this panel\, four distinguished writers will discuss their own paths as builders of writing communities.

SUMMARY:Richard Peabody Reads at the Alexandria Library (virtual event)
DESCRIPTION:“Join us for a reading by Richard Peabody: a romantic poet\, a keen writer of farce\, a master of satire\, a political activist\, and a pop-culture explorer. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nPeabody’s literary influences\, including strands of Punk\, Beat\, Alt\, experimental\, feminist\, and political protest\, blend with the purely lyrical to create a body of work that is both profound and pleasing. Whether addressing fatherhood\, unjust wars\, unrequited love\, or suburban malaise\, Peabody delivers\, with both freshness and gravitas\, important information about life as we live it now. \nPeabody will read a sample of his writing and then take questions about his latest work\, his writing process\, his experience as the publisher of Gargoyle Magazine and Paycock Press … or whatever else participants would like to know about his career.”

SUMMARY:Left Coast Writers Zoom Wandering in Greece: Athens\, Islands and Antiquities [virtual event]
DESCRIPTION:From Wadnerland Writers: \nPlease join us on Thursday\, March 18\, 2021 at 5PM PST for an online book event featuring the 8th anthology of award winning travel writing from Wanderland Writers: WANDERING IN GREECE: ATHENS\, ISLANDS AND ANTIQUITIES with editors Linda Watanabe McFerrin and Joanna Biggar and some of their contributors. \nOnce again workshop leaders Linda Watanabe McFerrin and Joanna Biggar take Wanderland Writers on another adventure —this time to Greece to wander amid its islands\, its rocky shores\, and upon those wine-dark seas of legend and lore where they discover how travelers who come to Greece as seekers find not only Greece\, but\, as Lawrence Durrell once wrote\, themselves—and generally so much more—on the journey. \nStone\, marble\, mountain\, sea and sky framed by endless blue—these are the elemental foundations of Greece\, just as Greece is the elemental foundation of Western Civilization. For thousands of years Greece and its culture\, philosophy\, politics and spirit has inspired and influenced the lives of generations. In Wandering in Greece\, this talented and inquisitive group of writers has captured some of the joy\, warmth\, grace\, and wisdom of Greece and its people. These stories\, poems and images will remind a whole new group of travelers that a visit is a must\, and those who have already ventured in Greece that they have to return.  \n—Ambassador Eleni Kounalakis\, ret.\, Lt. Governor of California \nContributors include Daphne Beyers\, Joanna Biggar\, Sandra Bracken\, Connie Burke\, Barbara J. Euser\, Annelize Goedbloed\, Thomas Harrell\, Donna Hemmila\, Laurie McAndish King\, Linda Watanabe McFerrin\, Gayle McGill\, Mary Jean Pramik\, and Anne Sigmon. \nFor more information go to www.wanderlandwriters.com
