Reuben Jackson Featured in The Montpelier Bridge In her article entitled "Clouds over Vermont," Mara Brooks describes the romantic relationship between Goddard alum Reuben Jackson and his second home. “I’d seen all these postcards where there were, like, green pastures, and gazebos, and I thought, ‘wouldn’t that be wonderful?’” Jackson recalled. “Of course, being a black kid in D.C., I couldn’t tell my friends that, so I was kind of a closet pastoralist.” In this wonderful article by The Bridge's Mara Brooks, reflections by Reuben Jackson and writing by Brooks combine to create a … [Read more...]

Scattered Clouds Receives Glowing Review in Foreword In book reviewer Matt Sutherland's short and sweet review of Scattered Clouds by Reuben Jackson, he remarks on Reuben's use of punctuation saying "By avoiding cumbersome punctuation and the formality of capitalization, Reuben Jackson lullabies his way into treasured-voice status, quiet yet forceful." The review is, as stated, a brief one; but, in a couple of sentences Sutherland gives an accurate aesthetic assessment of Reuben's unique style. That is an achievement unto itself. You can read the rest of the review here You can buy the … [Read more...]

Duke Ellington

"Melodic Recollections of Notable Musicians: Stories from the Stacks" Reuben Jackson on VPR Reuben Jackson discusses his twenty years working for the Smithsonian's Duke Ellington Collection in this hour long talk he gave over the Vermont Public Radio Airwaves in 2013. A baby-faced Duke Ellington fingering the keys "This isn’t HBO so I won’t go into any of the funny things I may have seen." Reuben Jackson thinks that hindsight is kind of funny, though in a disruptive way. That once you reconnect with a person you once were, you often end up not as smooth and contiguous a person … [Read more...]

Reuben Jackson Shares a Poem from his Upcoming Collection Like the city itself, the Northwest Washington, D.C. neighborhood in which I was raised has changed radically, and yet it has not. There is a certain way in which the streets -and the row brick houses- still provide context, and deep, deep, memory. The other day, I took a walk on my block and found myself standing in front of the house in which the neighbor/friend we called "Little Man" was raised. He kept the front porch company. And he was one of the saddest people I have ever met. He killed himself when he was 7. This poem is a … [Read more...]

All the Imagination Can Hold: Compositions by Saxophonist Wayne Shorter, 1974- 2018 Saxophonist Wayne Shorter was (and is) rightly celebrated for both his instrumental prowess and the countless classics he wrote and performed with jazz institutions like Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers and the classic Miles Davis Quintet.   His compositional gifts were also a key ingredient of ensembles such as Weather Report and post-Weather, Shorter-led aggregations.  Titles like "Blackthorn Rose" remain, to quote poet Frank O'Hara, "all the imagination can hold." Reuben Jackson is Archivist with the … [Read more...]

Reuben Jackson's Scattered Clouds Cover

PANK Publishes Early Review of "Scattered Clouds" by Reuben Jackson Poet Risa Denenberg describes her first experience reading Reuben Jackson in her review for his upcoming collection "Scattered Clouds" "Abashedly, I admit that I had not read Jackson prior to reading Scattered Clouds. But that is exactly why this compilation of poems from his first book with the two sections of newer poems is such a gem. If some of the poems are familiar, you will nod as you read them. And if not, you will feel like you’ve been missing something. Scattered Clouds further establishes Jackson’s role … [Read more...]
